Abruzzo Country Houses
Why Abruzzo? Abruzzo is one of the few places in Italy where you can be 30 min's from the beach and 30 min's from the mountains. We are talking mountains that are in excess of 8000 feet with many winter ski resorts and great summer walking. Abruzzo, at the same latitude of Rome, has great weather. Two and one half hour from Rome and equidistant between Florence and Naples it is ideal for exploring most of Italy. One third of Abruzzo is either National Park or Nature Reserve. This is a great natural environment with loads of Roman and medieval history to explore.
THE DEVELOPMENT DILEMMAS
Abruzzo started to be invaded by the “northerners” starting about 5 years ago. Ryan Air flying into Pescara should get both the blame and the credit. In fairness there are other low cost airlines also flying to Pescara from Frankfurt and Paris. House prices have increased significantly and continue to do so. It is becoming difficult to find country houses at prices that justify the time and the struggles to refurbish them. The principals of "Abruzzo Country Houses (ACH)" came here three years ago and having refurbished two houses believe that the way forward is to build new houses in the countryside in the old style. The old style is stone, wood and terra cotta. We are fortunate that there are still a few builders around who know and like to do this type of work. Carmine Lamonica shown here in photo 1 is one of these builders. Our plan is to offer new/old homes in the valleys leading to the mountains that are definitely country homes where you can live in comfort and security to enjoy the wonderful people, beaches and countryside of Abruzzo. These homes will be constructed to a high level of quality and finish. All the external walls will be made of stone as per photo 2. Internally the roofs will be supported by large wooden beams with terra cotta tiles as shown in photo 3.
